What to Expect During Your Laminate Flooring Installation Appointment

Getting new floors is exciting. It's also a project that temporarily disrupts your home, and if you've never been through a flooring installation before, you might not know what to expect. How long will it take? What do you need to do beforehand? Will your house be a mess?

Here's a straightforward look at what happens on installation day, so you can plan ahead and feel ready.

Before Installation Day

A lot of the work that determines how smoothly your installation goes happens before our crew arrives. Here's what you'll want to take care of ahead of time.

Clear the Room Completely

Everything needs to come out of the room where we're installing. That means furniture, rugs, electronics, decor, and anything stored in closets if we're flooring those spaces too. We don't move furniture as part of the standard installation process, so plan to have help lined up in advance.

If you have a piano, large appliance, or other heavy item that needs to be relocated, let us know ahead of time and we can discuss options.

Our complete guide to preparing your home for flooring installation walks through every prep step in detail and is worth reading before your appointment.

Handle Old Flooring Removal

If your existing floor needs to come out before the laminate goes in, we can typically handle that as part of the project. Make sure this is confirmed in your quote. If you're handling old floor removal yourself to save money, it needs to be completely done and the subfloor cleaned before our crew arrives.

Acclimate Your Materials

We'll confirm the delivery and acclimation plan with you ahead of time. Laminate planks need 48 to 72 hours in your home before they're installed. This usually means the materials are delivered a couple of days before installation day and stored in the room where they'll be installed, with the boxes open. This step is not optional — it directly affects how the floor performs after installation.

Keep the Space Clear of Pets and Kids

Installation involves cutting tools, heavy materials, and constant movement throughout the space. Plan to keep pets and young children out of the installation area for the day.

On Installation Day

When We Arrive

Our crew will arrive during the agreed window and do a quick walkthrough of the space before starting. This is a good time to mention anything that came up since the consultation, ask any last-minute questions, or point out specific areas you want us to pay attention to.

Subfloor Work

Depending on what we found during the consultation, we may spend some time on subfloor prep before the laminate goes down. This could involve sanding down high spots, filling low areas with leveling compound, or installing a moisture barrier. Don't be surprised if the first hour or two is prep work rather than actual laminate installation. That prep is what makes the floor last.

If you're curious why subfloor prep matters so much, our post on common flooring mistakes Asheville homeowners make covers what goes wrong when it gets skipped.

Underlayment Installation

Once the subfloor is ready, we install the underlayment before the planks go down. If your laminate comes with attached underlayment, this step is quick. If it requires separate sheet underlayment, we'll roll it out and tape the seams.

Laying the Planks

This is the main event. Our installers work methodically across the room, clicking planks together and maintaining the necessary expansion gaps along the walls and any fixed objects. This phase moves steadily and you'll see real progress.

Most standard rooms take two to four hours for the actual plank installation. Larger spaces, rooms with lots of angles, or areas requiring many cuts naturally take longer.

Noise Level

Be ready for some noise. Laminate installation involves tapping planks into place with a pull bar and mallet, plus power saw cuts for every trimmed piece. It's not a quiet process. If you work from home, plan to use a different part of the house or a coffee shop for the day.

Dust

Cutting laminate generates a moderate amount of fine dust. We take precautions to minimize spread, but some dust is unavoidable. If someone in your household is sensitive to dust or has respiratory concerns, plan for them to be out of the house during the cutting phases.

Finishing Touches

Once the planks are laid, we install transitions, trim, and molding. This is the detail work that pulls the whole project together and covers the expansion gaps along the walls.

If we're also installing laminate on a wall as part of the same project, that work is typically done after the floor is complete.

The Final Walkthrough

When the project is done, we'll walk through the room with you before we leave. We'll point out how the floor is meant to perform, review basic care instructions, and make sure you're satisfied with the finished result. This is the time to ask questions, not after we've packed up and left.

If something doesn't look right, say so. We'd rather address a concern on the spot than get a call about it later.

After Installation

When Can You Use the Room?

Because laminate is a floating floor installed without adhesives, you can walk on it immediately. We recommend waiting 24 hours before sliding heavy furniture back in, and using felt pads under all furniture legs going forward to prevent scratching.

Post-Installation Cleanup

We clean up our materials and debris before we leave. You'll likely want to do a pass with a dry microfiber mop to remove any fine dust that settled during the cutting work.

First Few Days

You may hear some slight settling sounds in the first day or two as the floor adjusts. This is normal with new laminate. If you hear persistent creaking or feel movement in specific spots, contact us. Occasional sounds are expected — persistent ones can indicate an issue worth checking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the installation isn't done in one day?

For large projects or those with significant subfloor work, we may need to return the following day to finish. We'll let you know this during the quote process so it's not a surprise.\

Do I need to be home during installation?

Someone needs to be available at the start to let us in and do the initial walkthrough. You don't necessarily need to be present the entire time, but we prefer to have someone reachable in case questions come up.

What if I notice a problem after you leave?

Contact us directly. We stand behind our work and will address any installation-related issue. Take photos of the problem area and we'll schedule a time to come take a look.

Can I see finished laminate projects before committing?

Yes. Our project gallery shows real completed installations in Asheville homes. You can also visit our showroom to see our laminate displays in person and get a feel for different options.
