The answer depends on several factors, but here's the practical breakdown for Asheville homeowners.
The Short Answer
Single room (200–300 sq ft): 1 day
Main floor (800–1,200 sq ft): 1–2 days
Whole home (1,500–2,500 sq ft): 2–4 days
Homes with subfloor repairs or complex layouts: Add 1–2 days
These estimates assume your subfloor is in good condition when we arrive. If we discover moisture problems, soft spots, or significant unevenness — all common in older Asheville homes — addressing those issues adds time before a single plank goes down.
The Day Before: Acclimation
Here's a step that catches many homeowners off guard: laminate can't go straight from the delivery truck onto your floor. The planks need to sit inside your home — in the rooms where they'll be installed — for at least 48 to 72 hours before installation begins. This process is called acclimation.
Why does it matter? Laminate's HDF (high-density fiberboard) core expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity. What Happens on Installation Day
Morning: Subfloor Inspection and Preparation

Level surface — industry standard allows no more than 3/16" variance over a 10-foot span
Soft spots, squeaks, or structural damage
Any old adhesive, staples, or debris from removed flooring
If issues exist, we address them before proceeding. Skipping this step is one of the most common and costly flooring mistakes Asheville homeowners make. We never rush past it.
Mid-Morning to Afternoon: Installation
Once the subfloor is confirmed ready, installation begins. For a standard room, here's roughly how the time breaks down:
Underlayment installation (20–45 min per room) — foam or combination underlayment rolls out across the subfloor to provide cushion, noise reduction, and a minor moisture barrier
First row placement (30–60 min) — the first row sets the direction and alignment for everything that follows; we take time to get it right

Cuts and detail work (adds 1–2 hours per room) — door casings, closets, hearths, irregular walls, and transitions require precise cuts and slow things down considerably
Transition strips and moldings — installed at doorways, between rooms, and at perimeter walls
End of Day: Cleanup and Walkthrough
We clean up all debris, sweep the new floors, and do a final walkthrough with you. We point out anything you should know — transition strips that need 24 hours to set, areas to keep furniture off while adhesive cures, and care instructions for your specific product.
Factors That Add Time
Subfloor repairs. Leveling compound takes 24 hours to cure. Replacing damaged subfloor sections can add a full day. We always flag these during our free in-home consultation so you're not surprised.
Tear-out of old flooring. If old carpet, tile, or vinyl needs to come up first, add several hours to a half-day depending on material and adhesive situation. This is usually included in our quotes — confirm during your estimate.
Complex room layouts. Open floor plans with multiple angles, built-in cabinetry, fireplaces, or unusual architectural features all slow installation. Bay windows, alcoves, and L-shaped rooms take longer than simple rectangles.
Stairways. Stairs are labor-intensive. Installing laminate on a standard staircase (12–15 steps) typically adds a full day to the project.
Multiple flooring types. If you're also getting tile in bathrooms or LVP in moisture-prone areas alongside laminate in the rest of the home, those projects run on parallel timelines. We coordinate the schedule so transitions between materials line up cleanly.
How to Minimize Your Disruption
The biggest thing you can do to keep the project on schedule is prepare your home thoroughly before the crew arrives. That means:
All furniture cleared from rooms getting new floors (we can discuss heavy items during consultation)
Children, pets, and sensitive family members with alternative arrangements for installation days
Access to a clean workspace without obstacles

When Can You Walk on New Laminate?
Laminate is a floating floor — the planks lock together and "float" over the subfloor without being nailed or glued. That means you can typically walk on it immediately after installation. No curing time required in most cases.
That said, we recommend:
Waiting 24 hours before moving heavy furniture back in (gives transition strips time to set and the floor time to settle)
Using felt pads under all furniture legs from day one
No wet mopping for the first 24 hours
